Musica Profana

This section presents the work of the composer R.O.T. Barsch, found in a waterlogged notebook stranded on the shoreline of a mid-Atlantic island. Of the composer, nothing beyond his or her initials and name are known. Their musical style has been described as “somehow simultaneously wet behind the ears and washed up.” As more works are deciphered, they will be added here.

Gently Swerves the Tram

A pleasant afternoon commute set to music, intended for a wind quartet. Reminiscent of the background music in classic SimCity?

What We Cannot Speak Of (TLP7)

A forbidding stricture of 20th Century philosophy, to be sung with gusto.

Text: Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus 7, own translation.

What we cannot speak of we must pass in silence,
we must pass in silence whereof we cannot speak.
What we cannot speak of we must pass in silence,
we must pass in silence whereof we cannot speak.

Wovon man nicht sprechen kann,
davon muss man schweigen.
Was sich überhaupt sagen lässt,
lässt sich klar sagen.

Con-clave

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; cantum habemus!
Laetitiam facit; harmoniam donat; diu cantemus!

Vita nostra brevis est; brevi finietur.
Voce clara canamus dum vocem habemus.

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; cantum habemus!
Laetitiam facit; harmoniam donat; diu cantemus!

Floreat melodia!
Floreat harmonia!
Floreat rhythmus!
Floreat musica!

Floreant artes nostrae!
Floreat poesis nostra!
Floreant vitae nostrae!
Musica floreat!
